Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Under the supervision of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) oversees, manages, and coordinates Planned Parenthood North Central States financial managements systems across the five-state region of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska and is responsible for ensuring that its one owned and one managed Affiliate, with 6 ancillaries that consists of 13 different EINS (entities) that in combination account for $100 million of assets and $70 million of annual operating revenues, achieve their strategic goals.

As a member of the highly collaborative Executive Team, the CFO is a leader in the organization and participates in strategic planning and decision making. The CFO will supervise finance, accounting, purchasing, inventory management, payor contracting, billing and revenue management functions

The CFO works collaboratively with leaders across the organization to ensure that all patients (approximately 100,000 unique patients per year) and staff (over 500 employees) are safe and secure. As a leader in the organization, the CFO is responsible to drive the success of key strategic objectives which support the mission and strategies of Planned Parenthood. The CFO is an advocate in implementing our mission to “affirm the human right to reproductive health and freedom and adheres to the highest ethical standards at all times.



Executive Leadership

  • Lead in the creation and implementation of the strategic plan in collaboration with the CEO. COO and Executive Team.
  • Provide strategic and financial leadership and clear communications to the Executive Team in the areas of treasury, budgeting, audit, tax, accounting, short-term and long-term forecasting, and strategic financial modeling.
  • Prepare reports for the Executive Team regarding the organization’s business activity and financial position for all organizations including ancillaries.
  • Develop positive working relationships with and provide support to the PPMNS Fund and PPH Foundation Chairs and Treasurer of the PPNCS Board of Directors.
  • Provide financial reports and information to the various entity Boards of Directors and serve as staff on the Finance and Audit Committees of the Boards.
  • Work with the Boards of the PPMNS Fund and PPH Foundation, to provide strategic management and operational oversight of the investment portfolio(s); serve as staff to this Board.
  • Oversee and manage financial information, financial systems (including the general ledger), and financial policies and procedures.
  • Manage the Treasury function including cash, debt, and investments.
  • Ensure each entity's compliance with Federal, State(s), and local laws, rules and regulations in the areas of tax, audit, grant management and other required financial filings and registrations.
  • Oversee respective areas to ensure requirements are met for Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) accreditation.
  • Respond to Chief Executive Officer with accurate and timely work to facilitate the organization’s financial needs and strategic goals.

Financial Management

Through management of the Finance and Accounting staff:

  • Oversee coordination of annual budget processes and reporting by establishing schedules, collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data, and recommending plans.
  • Oversee disbursement activities, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, petty cash, employee expense reports, cash control, and total corporate payroll tax compliance.
  • Ensure that payroll and benefit expenses and liabilities are accurately transferred from payroll software into the general ledger (and audit payroll administration systems).
  • Oversee the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, internal and external monthly financial statements, audits, and budgets
  • Oversee each entity's audit process including preparation of financial statements and work papers, including an inventory of fixed assets.
  • Oversee management of cash flow to maximize earnings and realize all available payment discounts; Oversee daily cash management; oversee recording and monitoring of cash receipts, reconciliation of bank statements, and cash transfers.
  • Work with other departments and staff regarding accounting and budgeting matters, providing quality customer service and support.

Billing and Revenue Management

Through management of the Billing and Review Management staff:

  • Oversee the maximization of revenues and patient billings
  • Ensure the accurate processing of insurance and patient account receivables.
  • Develop and foster a strong partnership with clinical operations with a focus on continuous process improvement and exceptional service skills

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in accounting, finance, or related field or work equivalent
  • Eight to ten years financial management experience
  • Minimum of five years leadership and seven years supervisory experience
  • CPA and auditing experience
  • Non-profit accounting experience
  • Commitment to mission of PPNCS and ancillaries

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of fund-accounting
  • Experience with federal and state grants management
