MannKind is seeking a finance manager for R&D Finance who will play a key role in the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) organization. Reporting to the VP Finance, this position will be responsible for financial, analytical and budget support for the R&D organization. Responsibilities include managing functional budgets, providing operational thought leadership, analytics, and partnering with functional and program leaders. This position will be located in Westlake Village, CA. This is a great opportunity to join a capable Finance team in a growing organization.

The candidate will demonstrate a deep knowledge of the R&D processes and the ability to understand and apply various principles to address challenges, raise business issues, and identify and implement process improvement opportunities. A strong candidate will have a demonstrated ability to communicate to peers, clients and senior management in a clear and concise manner.

  • Serve on R&D leadership team and provide financial thought leadership to the Chief Medical Officer and his team. 
  • Manage several FP&A responsibilities in support of the R&D organization and leadership, including financial planning and tracking of operating expenses, headcount reporting, monthly close support, quarterly forecasting, annual budgeting and variance analyses.
  • Support R&D functions, analyzing and accounting for expenses and identify opportunities for efficiency. Create and manage spend-tracking and forecast models and monitor R&D activities, expenses and accruals.
  • Monitor the performance of R&D service providers, clinical trial activity and costs. Estimate monthly R&D expense accruals, including clinical studies.
  • Help prepare and maintain the R&D group and the company’s budget.
  • Make financial planning and control recommendations, supported by detailed financial information and analysis.
  • Help prepare monthly/quarterly reviews and year-end audits and periodic reports to the SEC.
  • Prepare accounting analysis to determine the appropriate R&D expense classification and ensure accuracy of the financials.
  • Help develop processes and procedures to effectively scale the company.
  • Comparison of expense trends against Budget/Forecast.
  • Tracking of expenses recorded on the General Ledger and invoices received and/or paid by purchase order. 
  • Support R&D Program teams and the R&D leadership team during financial planning processes.
  • Participate on high-priority valuation or corporate development projects, including analyses supporting clinical program investment decisions. Projects may also include analyses for M&A and licensing decisions.

Duties and responsibilities are not limited to the above and may include other assignments as needed.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Finance or Accounting. MBA and/or CPA preferred. 
  • 7 years of Finance-related experience with at least three years in FP&A required; Life Science/Biotech experience required. 
  • Prior experience with ERP systems, Financial Planning tools and other financial systems implementations. 
  • Positive work ethic, superb communication and organizational skills with a high attention to detail, and unquestionable integrity and personal ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with the ability to think strategically. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work within teams and influence personnel across functions and levels.
