We are seeking an individual who can effectively manage the SEC reporting and disclosure process at Akcea.  The successful candidate must be highly organized and have a strong understanding of technical accounting guidance. This position requires strong oral and written skills as well as effective interpersonal skills. It also requires the ability to meet frequent deadlines and to perform responsibilities within tight schedules and under pressure. This position must work effectively within a team and across departments.


This position requires an in-depth knowledge of the financial reporting process, key filings and dates, management of timelines, and effective communication with various levels of management and audit staff.  The role requires monitoring, interpretation and compliance with evolving accounting guidance relevant to our business.  The position often involves working on complex problems and business processes in which the analysis of situations and/or data frequently requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple, interdependent factors and professional judgment.


  • Prepare the Quarterly and Annual Reports on Form 10-Q/K and manage the internal and external review for these documents
  • As part of the quarterly and annual filing process, this position will work collaboratively with our parent company (Ionis Pharmaceuticals), and adhere to their deadlines, policies and procedures, and consistency in public disclosures
  • Prepare quarterly earnings release
  • Create and maintain SEC calendar to inform parties of necessary deadline adherence for the following processes: financial close, BOD package, press release and 10-Q/K
  • Monitor and ensure timely identification and compliance with evolving accounting guidance relevant to Akcea’s business, provide US GAAP interpretation and prepare technical memorandums that document issues in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner
  • Communicate and explain accounting issues and evolving accounting guidance to the management team
  • Manage communications with external auditors on external financial statements and accounting issues to ensure auditor agreement with company decisions on accounting disclosures, and issues
  • Assist in the coordination of annual audit and quarterly review activities of external auditors
  • Prepare the FAS 123R (ASC Topic 718) stock compensation calculations
  • Create, implement and maintain comprehensive worldwide accounting policy documents to improve clarity and consistency
  • Implement and maintain reporting procedures to comply with internal control requirements
  • Perform continuous assessment of the close process and process re-engineering to reduce the timing to close the financial period
  • Support month end and year end closing
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor Degree in Accountancy or Business required
  • CPA, CMA or MBA required
  • 8+ years combined in public or private accounting
  • Experience at a Public Company or a Public Accounting Firm required
  • Experience in the application of current authoritative literature
  • Experience interfacing with management
  • Revenue recognition experience for a commercial biotechnology company a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound problem-solving abilities
  • An ability to be productive and successful in an intense work environment and work under tight deadlines
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive work ethic
  • Flexible to changing priorities
  • Strong internal control emphasis
  • Advanced Excel skills required and proficiency with other Microsoft Office products
