Sr. Manager, Global Medical Communications

The Senior Manager, Global Medical Communications reports to the Senior Director, Global Medical Communications and Publications. The Global Medical Comunications team is responsible for assisting the development and leading the execution of the global medical communication strategy and tactics in addition to creating high-quality and high-impact global resources that communicate relevant disease-state and scientific data on Akcea’s hATTR platform. The Global Medical Communication team works closely with cross-functional and cross-geographic partners including the Global Medical Affairs Leads and Clinical Development to inform and execute medical strategies. This position will be based in Boston, MA.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development of scientific and medical communication resources aligned to global strategy including but not limited to slide decks, scientific publication planning, scientific platform, and clinical/scientific FAQs for Akcea’s and the hATTR (hereditary ATTR Amyloidosis) programs
  • Monitor and analyze medical insights and inquiries to inform development of scientific and medical resources
  • Propose directional changes to shape global content based on insights, current trends, and shifts in product landscape
  • Drive and/or support strategy and scientific content development for scientific meetings
  • Drive and/or support strategy and scientific content development for advisory board meetings
  • Provide scientific support to other Akcea departments
  • Develop disease state resources for the field that educate on topics relevant to the therapeutic area
  • Review scientific content for accuracy
  • Understand global regulatory landscape and apply expertise to the development of scientific resources
  • Analyze medical literature to inform medical strategies and tactics
  • Manage project-associated budgets and vendors
  • Other projects or activities as assigned


  • Prior experience in Medical Affairs within the biopharmaceutical industry, and/or clinical or research experience in neurology or cardiology is preferred
  • An understanding of the pharmaceutical commercialization process and knowledge of the regulatory and legal guidelines affecting promotion of prescription products
  • Aptitude in writing and presenting on scientific and clinical data
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, organizational, time management, and project planning skills
  • Demonstrated track record of strategic execution in a cross functional environment
  • The ability to work in teams and interface in a dynamic environment across corporate functions
  • Strong computer and database skills, particularly with Microsoft Office products
  • Approximate travel 10-25%

Education Requirements:

  • Doctorate Degree (PhD, PharmD, MD, DO)
  • 2+ years experience working in medical communications for a pharmaceutical/biotech company or medical communications agency
