||Atmospheric Scientist - Drought
||INNOVIM, LLC is searching for a full-time atmospheric scientist with experience in drought and hydrological applications to support tasks at the Climate Prediction Center/NCEP/NWS in College Park, MD.
The candidate will provide science and software development support for research work focused on precipitation forecasts with the goal to improve the operational Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Seasonal Drought Outlook (SDO). The SDO is a product that is released
once per month for anticipated drought category changes over the next three month season and is based on varying inputs that span multiple time scales. The project is sponsored by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) program.
The tasks include:
(1) assist in obtaining, processing and evaluation of global dynamical model forecast data,
(2) assist in using statistical post processing strategies to develop experimental hybrid dynamical-statistical forecast guidance products for precipitation, and select land surface states,
(3) assist in transition of developed promising forecast tools to the operational environment.
The candidate will work with both realtime dynamical model output from international operational centers as well as with staged datasets such as the WMO Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) and the North American Multi Model Ensemble (NMME) databases.
||The position requires an M.S. or Ph.D. in atmospheric science or hydrology.
Required experience includes the ability to process and analyze observational and dynamical model datasets and a strong background and working knowledge of sophisticated statistical analysis techniques.
The best candidates will have a good understanding of drought related processes and indices and an interest in operational forecasting applications. Candidates need to be proficient in scientific programming and display (e.g., Python, MATLAB, GrADs, NCL, etc.)
and UNIX shell scripting with experience using ArcGIS helpful. Candidates should have experience working both independently and as part of a team in designing and carrying out research.
The successful candidate is expected to work very closely with atmospheric and hydrologic scientists at CPC. The candidate must be a U.S. Citizen, or Permanent Resident holding a working status, and be able to pass a NACI clearance.
