Summary:  

To support the Division's Senior Manager in planning and implementing the public profile and visibility activities of the American College of Surgeons (ACS); to support the College's public information relationships with the media, the profession, and general public; to serve as the Division's liaison with the ACS Human Resources staff on several regular internal communications projects. 

This exempt position will report to the Senior Manager, Public Profile and Visibility in the Division of Integrated Communications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • ​Provides support to the organization in its relations with the media, as directed by Senior Manager, and in collaboration with Public Information Associate.   Researches various topics for timely information for development of public information materials and responses as requested by Senior Manager.  
  • ​Completes tasks in development of news releases and performs other print and web editorial duties under direction of Senior Manager.    
  • ​Monitors media placement of College news stories in print and electronic media. Generates media monitoring reports for key stakeholders; works with web team to ensure timely placement of news items on public facing website; and collaborates with Public Information Associate on social media messaging on news coverage of College programs and initiatives. 
  • Disseminates information about the College and its activities to members and the general public, including staffing--in collaboration with other public information staff--the organization's media query and postmaster email boxes.
  • ​Functions as an editor of the employee newsletter and contributes content to the organization's LinkedIn page. 
  • ​Provides needed assistance to Senior Manager in preparing press kit, supplies and other press materials for the annual Clinical Congress, Quality and Safety Conference, and other programs and meetings.     
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required (English, Communications, Public Relations, or Journalism major preferred).
  • At least one year of professional experience in a related role required.
  • Editorial experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) necessary to effectively interact with all levels of organization.
  • Capable of providing excellent customer service.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to multi-task.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Display high level of energy and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with all division teams and management.

Physical/Work Environment: Fast paced with significant people interaction. No lifting over 20 pounds, minimal reaching bending and stooping. Performs work in a normal office environment with long hours in front of the computer.

Other Necessary Requirements: Evening or weekend duties may be required.  Minimal travel for activities such as out of town meetings is required.
