Summary:  

The Technical Specialist is responsible for providing technical expertise to support development of the AJCC Cancer Staging System, oversees the development and delivery of education and training on cancer staging, and provides technical support for clinician and cancer registrar inquiries about the staging system.  Integrates detailed knowledge of cancer staging, anatomy, physiology, and disease knowledge with clinician input, research from journal articles, and external guidelines and protocols to develop relevant content and provide appropriate responses to staging inquiries.

This position is based in our home office in Chicago, Illinois and the work will be done onsite.

This exempt position will report to the Manager, AJCC in the Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical support to the expert panels in the development and maintenance of the cancer staging system and related products.Researches clinical information, journal articles, and published guidelines, and analyzes the information and integrates this with applied anatomy and staging knowledge to support the development and updates to the cancer staging system.
  • Works in collaboration with the expert panels and cancer registry community to identify, develop and deliver educational programs and resources for the cancer registry and clinical communities.
  • Serves as a resource to Cancer Programs technical staff by providing expertise on cancer staging, developing and conducting in-service training programs, and by participating in internal and external committees and activities that involve cancer staging.
  • Provides technical support for clinician and cancer registrar inquiries about the staging system.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required.
  • Must be a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) with a minimum of five years hospital-based experience.Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is preferred but not required.
  • Extensive experience with cancer data collection, registration standards, and staging required.
  • In-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and study of diseases.
  • Ability to work with and guide discussions with physician volunteer committees.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to effectively interact with all levels of organization.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Display high level of energy and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as a member of a team.

Physical/Work Environment: Fast paced with significant people interaction. No lifting over 20 pounds, minimal reaching bending and stooping. Performs work in a normal office environment with long hours in front of the computer.

Other Necessary Requirements: Evening or weekend duties may be required.  Minimal travel for activities such as out of town meetings is required.
