What the Manager, Eos News and Features Editor does

Eos has provided value to AGU throughout its nearly 100-year history. In 2014 Eos was relaunched as an open, digital-first source of Earth and space science news and perspectives accompanied by a full- color, print magazine for members. The relaunch was very
successful, and Eos has grown in stature, reach, and impact.
This year, we are revisiting the vision and editorial focus of Eos and reorganizing several staff duties to ensure that Eos keeps moving forward, including the appointment of a Manager, Eos News and Features Editor. The Manager, Eos News and Features Editor
is responsible for plotting and executing the news editorial agenda, editing feature articles and other articles as assigned; originating, editing and/or writing long-lead articles; overseeing scientist-written content, and building Eos’ capacity to acquire,
create, and curate Earth and space science news while maintaining Eos’s high journalistic standards.
• Manages the assigning and/or editing of all Eos content, including news articles, features, scientist-written content, long-lead content such as Opinion pieces, GeoFIZZ, tributes, and project updates.
• Works with Editor in Chief to chart the editorial direction of Eos by creating and updating an editorial plan, reflecting the content strategy.
• Oversees the content schedule and works with Editor in Chief to ensure that major events and issues are considered for coverage in a timely manner.
• Assists Editor in Chief in reviewing and vetting scientific submissions. Oversees the scientific review of articles and evaluates the decisions of the Editors.
• Leads newsgathering and news editorial processes:
o Proposes and generates story ideas and works with the Editor in Chief to prioritize coverage.
o Assigns stories to staff reporters/writers, providing coaching and guidance on content, approach, and writing. Reviews pitches from staff reporters/writers and approves or redirects as needed. Encourages cultivation by writers of a variety of news sources.
o Manages freelance journalists and science writers. Identifies, recruits/cultivates, and qualifies prospective freelancers to ensure a strong, diverse, and international pool of resources. Reviews pitches and approves story ideas. Provides coaching and guidance.
Recommends freelance rates to Editor in Chief.
• Directs and supervises the Senior News Writer and News Writer/Production Associate by assigning stories and mentoring in news coverage strategies.
• Provides coaching to staff and freelancers on standards and practices and helps to identify news gaps, opportunities, and sources.
• Serves as editor for most articles; assigns others for review by another editor.
• When warranted, assigns additional review of news articles and informs the Editor in Chief of potentially controversial content.
• Ensures smooth workflow for Research Spotlights and content inputs from other departments.
• Works with the editorial and production coordinator and her management of the GEMS publishing system by reviewing the status of submissions, coaching on communications with authors, and approving the prioritization of the workload.
• Collaborates with the editor responsible for Eos Centennial content to develop, outline and generate concepts for articles for Eos and overall.
• Performs a high-level quality control function to ensure that Eos content is shaped and expressed in ways that will achieve the desired impact and impression on readers and users.
• Vets selection of images for news articles and, as needed, identifies suitable images, working with writers and production team to ensure proper credit and rights clearance.
• Actively contributes to the discussion of coverage and campaigns within the Editorial Center, which develops, coordinates, and collaboratively plans content across AGU digital platforms and communications channels.
• Assesses articles and makes recommendations on their publishing dates and placement. Recommends stories for inclusion in AGUniverse, EosBuzz, This Week at AGU, and the Eos magazine.
• Contributes to strategies around social media of Eos content (news and other content) and directs social media in partnership with other members of the team.
• Assists with oversight of the freelance news budget.
• Other duties as assigned.
What the Manager, Eos News and Features Editor brings to the team
• Bachelor’s Degree with minimum of 8 years of science editorial leadership or journalism experience in a media, publishing or a scientific organization with at least 5 years in a lead editorial role, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced
degree is a plus.
• High level of familiarity with science and science news; specific and expert knowledge of Earth and space sciences and their impact is highly desirable.
• Experience managing and developing staff.
• Knowledge of the broad news and information marketplace as well as the science news marketplace and current practices.
• Experience and in-depth knowledge of computer software and demonstrated proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Experience operating in a digital-first news environment, understanding of content management and workflows strongly preferred.
• Seasoned editor with advanced ability to thoughtfully redirect and rewrite lengthy articles.
• Demonstrated ability to convey complex ideas and high-level science through effective, creative, and lively writing, editing, and storytelling.
• Excellent eye for detail and a good nose for news, news strategy, and approaches.
• Excellent ability to make scientific content relatable and compelling to public audiences.
• Excellent ability to juggle multiple priorities and be highly flexible and nimble while meeting tight publication deadlines and requirements.
• Media-savvy, knowledgeable of the broad news and information marketplace as well as the science news marketplace.
• Knowledge of Earth and space sciences and their impact.
• Strong listening, coaching, and communication skills.
• Effective and reliable partner and team leader, working collaboratively with diverse people at a variety of levels to elicit top-notch journalism.
• Knowledge of taxonomy, tagging, and search engine optimization.
• Ability to exercise highest level of discretion on internal and external confidential matters and to maintain high level of confidentiality, included but not limited to strategic planning initiatives, contracts, budgeting, and personnel matters.
• Ability to monitor budget.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit high-quality contributors and to network and collaborate to grow content and its impact.
• Ability to travel.
