a.i. solutions is looking to hire interns for the FreeFlyer product group to contribute to the solution of real-world flight dynamics problems in the aerospace industry supporting customers such as NASA, the US Air Force, and commercial companies worldwide. FreeFlyer is an industry-leading commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) flight dynamics tool that is used in ground systems supporting communications, scientific, military, educational, and commercial space-based missions across the globe. Being a FreeFlyer intern means making meaningful contributions to the future of the tool as you either work with the development team to conduct research into new technologies and develop software prototypes or work with the technical support team to use the tool and overcome challenging aerospace engineering hurdles in support of our customers. The successful candidate will interface with all areas of the FreeFlyer product team, learn about the industry, and learn about what a.i. solutions contributes to that industry over the course of their internship.

Essential Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Development Focus
    • Planning and running simulations on third-party tools to improve developer productivity
    • Investigating performance-improving external software architectures for use in the product
    • Designing and developing utility and infrastructure applications for use by the FreeFlyer team
  • Systems Engineering Focus
    • Generating sample Mission Plans in FreeFlyer in response to customer requests
    • Building and updating orbital mechanics instructional materials using FreeFlyer
    • Creating FreeFlyer webcasts and demonstration videos to highlight new features
    • Updating the FreeFlyer help file both in architecture and in content
  • General
    • Supporting the FreeFlyer team’s release cycle with verification testing efforts
    • Providing meaningful design feedback during group reviews of new FreeFlyer features
    • Attending company group meetings to better understand the industry and how we fit into it
    • Learning about the different missions the company supports and our role in those tasks

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working towards a bachelors, masters, or PhD in engineering, mathematics, physics, or related field
  • Basic familiarity with flight dynamics and/or orbital mechanics
  • U.S. citizenship

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with FreeFlyer and excitement about flight dynamics
  • Programming experience in C++, C#, and Java, including working with source-controlled operational code
  • Ability to quickly connect in-person and in writing, and to actively listen and perceive the needs, values, or opinions of others
  • Proactivity in identifying and addressing challenges to include innovations that result in positive organizational impact
  • Demonstrated leadership accomplishments academically and personally
